Downspouts and Roof Drainage for West Chester Homes
A gutter only collects water. The downspouts decide where it goes. Too few outlets, or spouts that dump against the foundation, cause most of the wet basements and washed-out beds we see.
- 3x4-inch upgrades
- Extensions and splash blocks
- Outlet count sized to roof area
How far should downspouts discharge from the foundation?
A common guideline is to discharge downspout water at least four to six feet from the foundation, onto ground that slopes away from the house. Short elbows that dump water at the wall are a frequent cause of wet basements. Extensions, splash blocks or a lawn outlet usually solve it without digging.

How many downspouts does a gutter run need?
As a rule of thumb, plan on one downspout for every 30 to 40 feet of gutter, with corners and valleys getting extra attention. Larger 3x4-inch downspouts move far more water than standard 2x3-inch, which often fixes overflow without replacing the gutter itself. We size outlets to the roof area each run drains.
For budgeting, Angi's 2026 downspout guide puts a typical installation at $315 to $1,070, about $670 on average, with aluminum downspouts at $7 to $30 per linear foot (Angi, updated Sept. 18, 2026, accessed Oct 29, 2026). Typical estimates based on published national 2026 ranges, last reviewed October 2026. Not a quote; your exact price comes after a free inspection.

Drainage options we install
- Added outlets on long runs or under valleys.
- 3x4-inch downspouts in place of 2x3-inch.
- Hinged or fixed extensions that clear walkways.
- Splash blocks and rock-lined outlets on sloped lots.
West Chester Borough's stormwater fee: what changed
For years, Borough properties paid a Stream Protection Fee based on impervious area, and owners could earn credits for features that slowed roof runoff. One was a downspout-disconnection credit: discharge at least 3 feet from structures, no more than 500 square feet of roof per downspout, and a pervious receiving area at least 20 percent of the roof feeding it (Borough SPF residential credit manual, 2017).
The Borough stopped collecting the fee for all payors in 2026 (HelloWestChesterPA, Aug. 3, 2026). Good drainage still protects your foundation, fee or no fee.
